What is Built-up Roofing?

Built-up is made of several layers of bitumen surfaces, and is finished off with an aggregate layer. Each layer is called a “ply sheet,” and each ply sheet is about 36 inches wide. Types of built-up roofing include:

• Asphalt
• Ballasted asphalt
• Gravel
• Coal tar

Why Use Built-up Roofing?

Although it costs more to install initially, built-up roofing offers a number of benefits over existing low-slope roofs, including excellent waterproofing, UV protection, a low amount of ongoing maintenance, an ability to handle long-term weather extremes, and a low cost of maintenance. In addition, ballasted asphalt works better than many other varieties of BUR because of its better ability to prevent the spread of fire.

Built-up roofs have only now come into more popular use, even though they’ve already been around in the US for more than a century.

Commercial Built Up Roofing & Warranties

If you choose to purchase BUR, keep in mind that two warranties will be available. The first is on the commercial roofing in CT company’s actual product, which covers any defects in the manufacture of the BUR. Second, the contractor will offer a warranty regarding his workmanship. No industry standard exists for either of these warranties, so you have to compare and contrast the offers available in your region.
