Eagle Rivet put this shingled residential style roof on the Meadow Farm Condominium Association. By replacing the asphalt shingles, adding insulation and ventilation along with structural upgrades, the association was able to fix what had been a damaged roof resulting from the extremely harsh winters of the last couple years and upgrade the roof to the point that it will be able to withstand the wintry conditions that caused such damage in the first place. Different buildings, budgets, and needs require a variety of solutions to get the job done. For any commercial building, knowing the type of roof that will be most effective for the climate and the building use is imperative. With technology advances in every sector options are more plentiful than ever and the roofing industry is no different. At Eagle Rivet we recently completed roofs for several different buildings using two different but equally effective styles, TPO and EPDM.
Thermoplastic PolyOlefin, or TPO, is seeing a surge in usage on flat roofs and Boston new flat roof systems due to the nature of the material. It is a highly efficient, heat and sunlight reflective, single-ply membrane that is also resistant to corrosion and degradation from ozone, chemicals, and ultraviolet radiation. TPO has other distinct advantages to it including versatility in installation – can be installed mechanically with glue or laid flat and weighed down. The energy efficiency is where TPO shines, due to the reflective nature of TPO it keeps the sun from heating up the building and lowers energy costs during the warmer months while not losing any insulating properties during the colder months. Ethylene propylene diene monomer, commonly referred to as EPDM, is another popular roofing material for industrial projects, one that we here at Eagle Rivet highly recommend that all of our commercial customers think about using. EPDM can withstand the harsh winters and hot summers of New England, is steam and ice resistant, waterproof, and resistant to corrosion. EPDM is especially effective for industrial roofs in which the inside conditions may be as harsh as the outside. Being a permeable material, EPDM allows water vapor to escape without letting moisture in. EPDM is also environmentally friendly, the entire roof can be recycled for another purpose once it’s time as roofing material is over. It is extremely cost effective, having a guaranteed life of 20 years but often lasting much longer than that.
